A message from Lara Henke & Gina Kreuter, Fort Howard First Grade Class of 2028
Fort Howard first graders have been working on our unit about relationships in which we really focus on our students understanding their identity and culture. We want them to be proud of who they are and never be afraid to stand up for themselves. We focus on what makes us different but we spend the most time focusing on what makes us the same.
The activity we do is pair the students up and have them trace half of their bodies and then half of their partner's together to make "one person." Each student colors their half to look like them. On the outside the students write or draw things that are the same about them. First graders typically talk about how they both like Legos or McDonald's, but after awhile they started putting other things on their posters such as:
"We got the same love"
"We share the same pain and blood"
"We share friendship"
"We share the same emotions"
"We hear the same things"
Students then add hearts to the middle of their bodies to show that they share love. Another group added tears to show they share the same emotions, another adds band aids to show that they bleed the same blood and feel the same pain.
We are proud of our students! Photos from the activity
